5. Laying & Operation Specifications
The cable has different minimum bending radius requirements according to usage scenarios: 4 times the outer diameter (about 20 mm) for fixed installation; 6 times the outer diameter (about 30 mm) for dynamic laying scenarios with frequent bending such as solar tracking systems.
It is applicable for fixed clamping on photovoltaic module frames, dedicated photovoltaic cable trough wiring and light-duty conduit penetration laying, but direct buried laying in soil is prohibited. The cable must be matched with PV4/MC4 special connectors and crimped with professional photovoltaic crimping tools, and ordinary universal terminals are not allowed for replacement. Positive and negative polarity marks are continuously printed on the cable surface for easy identification. The minimum construction ambient temperature for laying is -40 °C. With a lightweight design of 4.5 kg per 100 m, the cable is convenient for manual laying and operation on rooftop construction sites.

| Layer-by-layer PV build-up narrative · tinned copper flexible conductor / irradiated XLPE insulation · 0.6/1.0 kV DC · no armour, no outer jacket · finished Ø ≈ 5.0 mm | |||
| 1. Product Identity & Ratings | |||
| PV1-F 1×4.0 is a single-core, flexible, tinned-copper photovoltaic DC cable rated 0.6/1.0 kV DC (max system voltage 1.8 kV), built and certified to TÜV 2 PFG 1169 / EN 50618. It is designed specifically for the DC side of photovoltaic systems — connecting solar modules in strings and running from the string junction box to the inverter. Unlike AC power cables, it is engineered for continuous outdoor exposure: ultraviolet sunlight, ozone, wide temperature swings, and mechanical handling on rooftops and racking. Finished diameter is about 5.0 mm, mass about 45 kg/km, and it is supplied in 200 m, 500 m or 1000 m coils or drums. | |||
| 2. Tinned Copper Flexible Conductor | |||
| The 4.0 mm² conductor is Class 5 flexible stranded tinned copper — typically 56 individual 0.30 mm tinned wires — giving a conductor diameter of about 2.8 mm and a maximum DC resistance of 4.61 Ω/km at 20 °C. The fine-strand construction gives the cable excellent flexibility for routing around module frames and cable clips, and the tin plating protects the copper strands against oxidation and atmospheric corrosion over decades of outdoor service. | |||
| 3. Irradiated XLPE Insulation | |||
| The conductor is fully enclosed in a 1.0 mm thick layer of electron-beam cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). The irradiation process cross-links the polymer chains, giving XLPE a 90 °C continuous conductor temperature rating (short-circuit up to 200 °C for ≤ 5 s), high mechanical strength, and outstanding resistance to UV, ozone, weathering and flame. The black carbon-loaded insulation itself serves as the outer weather jacket — there is no separate outer sheath. Routine AC proof is 3.5 kV for 5 minutes (or 6.5 kV DC for 15 minutes). | |||
| 4. No Armour — Single-Core Flexible | |||
| Unlike MV power cables, PV1-F has no steel armour and no copper-tape screen. It is a thin, round, single-core cable designed to be clipped directly onto the module frame, routed in PV-specific cable trays, or pulled into lightweight conduit. The 4 × OD minimum bend radius (≈ 20 mm) reflects its flexibility. One cable is used for the positive pole and one identical cable for the negative pole in each string. | |||
| 5. Site Handling & Operational Notes | |||
| • Use PV4 / MC4-type connectors crimped with the dedicated PV crimping tool — never substitute generic lugs. • Observe the 4 × OD minimum bend radius (≈ 20 mm); if the cable is flexed repeatedly (e.g. tracking systems), use 6 × OD. • Service range −40 to +90 °C; conductor up to 90 °C continuous. • Routine test 3.5 kV AC / 5 min. • UV preconditioning: 1000 h UV exposure per TÜV. • Marked + / − along the sheath. • At ≈ 4.5 kg per 100 m, the cable is light and supplied in large coils — easy to handle on rooftop and ground-mount PV installations. |
8. Implementation Standards & Certification Compliance
The design, production and inspection of PV1-F 1×4.0 mm² cable strictly follow multiple authoritative standards: German TÜV 2 PFG 1169 photovoltaic cable certification specification, European unified standard EN 50618 and Chinese national standard GB/T 32129. The internal conductor fully meets the EN 60228 Class 5 flexible conductor specification. The product has obtained TÜV certification and is suitable for all photovoltaic DC systems with a maximum voltage of 1.8 kV.
9. Packaging, Storage & Logistics Requirements
The standard packaging specifications of the cable are 200 m, 500 m and 1000 m per coil or wooden drum, and customized fixed-length cutting services can be provided according to customer demands. Each cable is printed with continuous identification marks, including model (PV1-F 1×4.0), rated voltage (0.6/1.0 kV), positive and negative polarity, manufacturer information, production year and meter scale marks.
For storage, the cable should be placed in dry and covered indoor environments with ambient temperature controlled at -20 °C to +40 °C, avoiding direct sunlight exposure. The sealing ends of the cable coil must be kept intact before construction to prevent moisture and dust from entering.

10. Procurement Guidelines
When purchasing, the complete specification PV1-F 1×4.0 mm² 0.6/1.0 kV DC and required length or packaging form must be clearly specified. It is recommended to purchase supporting PV4/MC4 connectors and special crimping tools in a unified manner, as unqualified connector crimping is the main cause of failure of photovoltaic DC systems.
Buyers shall request the factory official test report of the batch of products, which must include UV aging test data and tinned copper conductor inspection records, to verify the actual outer diameter, unit weight and conductor resistance indicators of the products, ensuring compliance with engineering standards.
11. Industry Common Questions & Professional Answers
Q1: What is the essential difference between PV1-F cable and ordinary RV/BV building wires?
A1: PV1-F cables are specially customized for outdoor high-intensity environmental operation. They adopt electron beam cross-linked XLPE insulation (instead of ordinary PVC material) and tinned copper stranded conductors, with the insulation layer integrating weather resistance protection. Ordinary PVC building wires are prone to aging, cracking and performance degradation after long-term exposure to UV and temperature cycles, and cannot adapt to outdoor photovoltaic working conditions.
Q2: Why do photovoltaic systems adopt single-core PV1-F cables instead of two-core cables?
A2: The DC working voltage of photovoltaic strings can reach up to 1.8 kV. Separate laying of positive and negative single-core cables makes the system layout more modular, supports flexible matching of various string lengths, and effectively eliminates the hidden danger of loop current heating caused by shared core laying of two-core cables.
Q3: What is the meaning of the PV1-F model code?
A3: PV stands for photovoltaic dedicated cable; 1 represents single-core structure; F means flexible conductor (Class 5 flexible stranded structure). This is a unified standardized model designation defined by TÜV for photovoltaic DC special cables.
Q4: What is the purpose of tinning copper conductors?
A4: The tin coating on the conductor surface can effectively isolate air and moisture, prevent copper strand oxidation and atmospheric corrosion. This is a key design to ensure the 25-year long service life of outdoor photovoltaic cables.
Q5: What are the advantages of irradiated cross-linked XLPE insulation?
A5: Electron beam irradiation cross-linking technology increases the maximum continuous working temperature of the cable from 70 °C (ordinary PVC cable) to 90 °C, and greatly improves the UV resistance, ozone resistance and flame retardancy of the insulation material, adapting to long-term harsh outdoor operation.
Q6: Why choose 4.0 mm² cable instead of 2.5 mm² for photovoltaic strings?
A6: 2.5 mm² cables are only suitable for string systems with current below 25 A and short laying distances. When the string current exceeds 25 A or the laying distance exceeds 30 m, 4.0 mm² cables need to be used. It can control the system voltage drop within 1% and reduce line power loss during the 25-year service cycle of the photovoltaic system.
Q7: Can PV1-F cables be buried directly in soil?
A7: Direct buried laying in soil is not recommended. The rated working condition of this cable is outdoor fixed installation with ventilation and light transmission. If buried laying is required for engineering needs, the cable must be laid in a UV-shielded protective conduit, or a cable with additional PE outer sheath shall be selected.
Q8: Why must MC4 connectors be matched for use?
A8: MC4 (PV4) dedicated connectors have professional weatherproof sealing, positive and negative polarity anti-misinsertion design, and support 1.5 kV DC high-voltage operation. Only professional crimping tools can ensure the crimping accuracy and tightness. Manual twisting or ordinary terminals are the primary cause of loose connection and failure of photovoltaic DC arrays.
Q9: What is the maximum applicable string voltage of the cable?
A9: The cable’s rated maximum system voltage is 1.8 kV DC, which fully covers the 1500 V high-voltage string specification commonly used in modern large-scale photovoltaic power stations, and reserves a sufficient safety margin for the open-circuit voltage rise of components in low-temperature environments.
Q10: What is the service life of PV1-F cables?
A10: Under standard construction specifications, correct connector matching and avoiding long-term water accumulation immersion, the cable can achieve a 25-year stable outdoor service life, which is synchronized with the warranty cycle of conventional photovoltaic modules.
Q11: Can PV1-F cables be used for inverter AC output circuits?
A11: It is not applicable. PV1-F is a professional DC cable, which does not meet the grid-connected specification and grounding safety requirements of AC power circuits. The AC output side of the inverter must adopt special AC cables such as RV, BV or YJV.
