H1Z2Z2-K 1×6.0 mm² — Harmonised Photovoltaic DC Cable Specification & Engineering Data
1. Product Overview & Rating Summary. H1Z2Z2-K 1×6.0 is the harmonised European photovoltaic DC cable rated 0.6/1.0 kV DC (max system voltage 1.8 kV), built and certified to EN 50618 / HD 6036 with the HAR certification mark. Unlike PV1-F's single-layer insulation that doubles as the weather jacket, H1Z2Z2-K uses a double-layer construction: inner halogen-free XLPE insulation plus outer halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin sheath. This separation of functions — electrical insulation inside, weather protection outside — gives better long-term outdoor reliability. The 6.0 mm² cross-section is the choice for commercial rooftop and ground-mount PV strings with longer home-runs (20–40 m) where voltage drop must stay within limits. Finished diameter is about 6.4 mm, mass about 68 kg/km.
2. Layer-by-Layer Construction (Conductor to Outer).
| Layer | Construction | Wall | Diameter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conductor | Flexible stranded tinned Cu, Class 5 — 50 × 0.40 mm | — | ≈ 3.2 mm |
| Inner insulation | Halogen-free cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), Z2 | 0.8 mm | ≈ 4.8 mm |
| Outer sheath | Halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin, Z2, black | 0.8 mm | ≈ 6.4 mm (finished) |
| Armour | None — unarmoured flexible cable | — | — |
3. Electrical Characteristics. The 6.0 mm² tinned-copper Class 5 conductor uses 50 × 0.40 mm tinned wires, giving a maximum DC resistance of 3.08 Ω/km at 20 °C — about 31% lower than the 4.0 mm²'s 4.49 Ω/km. Routine proof is 3.5 kV AC / 5 minutes (or 6.5 kV DC / 15 minutes). Insulation resistance ≥ 250 MΩ·km. With the single core in free air at 30 °C, reference loading is about 60 A; at 60 °C ambient the rating derates to about 47 A. The voltage drop on a 100 m two-pole run at 60 A is about 7.3 V loop. Conductor loss at 60 A is about 4.2 W per metre at 90 °C.

4. Thermal Response & Flame Behaviour. Halogen-free cross-linked XLPE sustains a 90 °C continuous conductor temperature, with short-circuit capability up to 250 °C for ≤ 5 s. The cable is rated for service ambients between −40 °C and +90 °C and is cold-bend tested at −40 °C. The black carbon-loaded outer sheath is UV-resistant (1000 h UV preconditioning), ozone-resistant, and flame-retardant to IEC 60332-1 (single-cable vertical flame, self-extinguishing). The Z2 designation means the cable releases no halogen acid gas (IEC 60754, ≤ 0.5% HCl equivalent) and low smoke (IEC 61034, light transmittance ≥ 60%) when burned.

5. Installation Practice & Handling. Minimum bend radius is 4 × OD (≈ 26 mm) for fixed installation, 6 × OD (≈ 38 mm) if repeatedly flexed. The larger 6.4 mm diameter makes the cable stiffer than 4.0 mm² — plan routing accordingly and use larger radius bends. Use PV4 / MC4-type connectors crimped with the dedicated PV crimping tool. Polarity (+ / −) and the HAR mark are printed along the black sheath. Laying temperature must not fall below −40 °C. At about 6.8 kg per 100 m, the cable is supplied in 100 m coils — suitable for commercial rooftop and ground-mount PV strings with longer home-runs.

6. Typical Service Applications. This 6.0 mm² double-layer build is the default interconnection cable for: commercial rooftop PV with longer string home-runs, utility-scale ground-mount PV plants, large-scale PV plants, industrial PV, and main PV DC trunking between strings and combiner boxes. The 6.0 mm² cross-section is specified when the string home-run exceeds 20 m and voltage drop must stay below 1.5% — the 4.0 mm² would incur excessive voltage drop on these longer runs.

7. Testing & Quality Assurance Regime. Routine tests on every coil include conductor DC resistance ≤ 3.08 Ω/km at 20 °C, the 3.5 kV AC / 5 min withstand, the 6.5 kV DC / 15 min withstand, insulation resistance ≥ 250 MΩ·km, dimensional check (inner insulation ≥ 0.8 mm; outer sheath ≥ 0.8 mm; OD ≈ 6.4 mm), and visual marking. Type tests include UV preconditioning (1000 h), thermal ageing (135 °C / 168 h), cold bend at −40 °C, heat shock at 150 °C, single-cable flame per IEC 60332-1, halogen acid gas per IEC 60754, smoke density per IEC 61034, ozone resistance, abrasion resistance, and tinned-copper strip check.

Construction Description
| Construction Description — H1Z2Z2-K 1×6.0 mm² | |||
| Layer-by-layer PV build-up · tinned copper flexible / double-layer halogen-free · 0.6/1.0 kV DC · finished Ø ≈ 6.4 mm | |||
| 1. Product Identity & Ratings | |||
| H1Z2Z2-K 1×6.0 is the harmonised European photovoltaic DC cable rated 0.6/1.0 kV DC (max system voltage 1.8 kV), built and certified to EN 50618 / HD 6036 with the HAR certification mark. It uses a double-layer construction — inner halogen-free XLPE insulation plus outer halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin sheath — which distinguishes it from PV1-F's single-layer design. Finished diameter is about 6.4 mm, mass about 68 kg/km, and it is supplied in 100 m coils for PV field wiring. | |||
| 2. Tinned Copper Flexible Conductor | |||
| The 6.0 mm² conductor is Class 5 flexible stranded tinned copper — 50 individual 0.40 mm tinned wires — giving a conductor diameter of about 3.2 mm and a maximum DC resistance of 3.08 Ω/km at 20 °C. The fine-strand construction gives the cable excellent flexibility for routing on rooftop racks and in ground-mount PV arrays, and the tin plating protects the copper strands against oxidation and atmospheric corrosion over decades of outdoor service. | |||
| 3. Inner Halogen-Free XLPE Insulation | |||
| The conductor is fully enclosed in a 0.8 mm layer of halogen-free cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). This inner layer provides the primary electrical insulation and withstands the 3.5 kV AC routine test. The Z2 designation means the insulation contains no halogen compounds. The irradiation process cross-links the polymer chains, giving XLPE a 90 °C continuous conductor temperature rating (short-circuit up to 250 °C for ≤ 5 s). | |||
| 4. Outer Halogen-Free Sheath | |||
| Over the inner insulation is a 0.8 mm layer of halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin. This outer sheath provides mechanical protection against abrasion, UV radiation, ozone, and weathering — a role that PV1-F's single-layer insulation must perform by itself. The black carbon-loaded formulation is UV-resistant (1000 h UV preconditioning per EN 50618). The double-layer design means the inner layer handles electrical insulation while the outer layer handles weather protection, giving better long-term outdoor reliability than single-layer PV cables. | |||
| 5. Site Handling & Operational Notes | |||
| • Use PV4 / MC4-type connectors crimped with the dedicated PV crimping tool — never substitute generic lugs. • Observe the 4 × OD minimum bend radius (≈ 26 mm); if flexed repeatedly, use 6 × OD. • Service range −40 to +90 °C; conductor up to 90 °C continuous. • Routine test 3.5 kV AC / 5 min. • UV preconditioning: 1000 h UV exposure per EN 50618. • Halogen-free: IEC 60754 acid gas ≤ 0.5% HCl; IEC 61034 smoke transmittance ≥ 60%. • At about 6.8 kg per 100 m, the cable is supplied in 100 m coils — suitable for commercial rooftop and ground-mount PV strings with longer home-runs. |
8. Factory Advantages

9. Packaging, Storage & Logistics. Standard delivery is 100 m per coil, also 200 m coils or drums on request. Each coil carries continuous marking: H1Z2Z2-K, 1×6.0, 0.6/1.0 kV, + / −, HAR, supplier identity, production year, and sequential metre marks. Storage should be in dry, covered premises at −20 to +40 °C, shielded from direct sunlight.

10. Procurement Specification. State "H1Z2Z2-K 1×6.0 mm² 0.6/1.0 kV DC" together with the required length. Always order PV4 / MC4-type connectors and the dedicated crimping tool at the same time. Always request the factory test certificate. Specify 6.0 mm² when string home-runs exceed 20 m or when string currents approach 55–60 A; for shorter home-runs on residential rooftop, 4.0 mm² is sufficient and lighter.
11. Cable Industry FAQ.
- Q1: What is the difference between H1Z2Z2-K and PV1-F? Both are PV DC cables rated 0.6/1.0 kV. PV1-F uses a single-layer XLPE insulation that doubles as the weather jacket. H1Z2Z2-K uses a double-layer construction — inner halogen-free XLPE insulation + outer halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin sheath — giving better weather resistance and longer outdoor service life. H1Z2Z2-K also carries the HAR harmonised mark, recognised across all EU member states.
- Q2: Why use 6.0 mm² instead of 4.0 mm²? The 6.0 mm² has 31% lower DC resistance (3.08 vs 4.49 Ω/km), higher ampacity (60 vs 45 A), and lower voltage drop on long home-runs. It is specified when string home-runs exceed 20 m or when string currents approach 55–60 A.
- Q3: Why use 50×0.40 instead of 56×0.30 strands? The 6.0 mm² conductor uses 50 × 0.40 mm tinned wires (vs 56 × 0.30 mm for 4.0 mm²). The slightly larger individual strands keep the fine-strand Class 5 flexibility while carrying more current.
- Q4: Why use tinned copper? Tinning protects the copper strands against oxidation and atmospheric corrosion over decades of outdoor service.
- Q5: Why use MC4 connectors? MC4 (PV4) connectors are weather-sealed, polarised, and rated for 1.5 kV DC. They are crimped with the dedicated tool.
- Q6: What is the maximum string voltage? H1Z2Z2-K is rated for 1.8 kV DC system voltage, covering 1500 V PV strings.
- Q7: How long does it last? When properly installed with correct connectors, H1Z2Z2-K is designed for a 25-year outdoor service life matching the solar module warranty.
- Q8: Is the double-layer construction more expensive than single-layer? Yes — the extra outer sheath layer adds about 10–15% to the cost per metre vs single-layer PV1-F. It is worth the premium in commercial/utility installations where 25-year reliability is critical; for DIY residential, PV1-F is adequate.
- Q9: When should I choose 4.0 mm² vs 6.0 mm²? Choose 4.0 mm² for residential rooftop with short home-runs (< 15 m) and strings under 40 A. Choose 6.0 mm² for commercial rooftop, ground-mount, or longer home-runs where voltage drop matters.
- Q10: Can H1Z2Z2-K be used with PV1-F connectors? Yes — both use the standard PV4/MC4 connector interface. The connectors are interchangeable, but the crimping die must match the conductor cross-section (4.0 vs 6.0 mm²).
- Q11: What does the HAR mark mean? The HAR (harmonised) certification mark on H1Z2Z2-K means the cable meets a harmonised European standard recognised across all EU member states — no additional national certification is required when selling or installing in any EU country.
